Description

What this equipment is and what it's designed for.

The LAPSIM base platform is a haptic laparoscopic surgery simulator combining force feedback, detailed graphics and authentic instrument handles with a laparoscopic camera, mounted on a height-adjustable cart with trackpad and touchscreen.

It is supplied with the Basic Skills module, covering everything from navigation and instrument handling to suturing, and with an admin mode to create custom courses and benchmarks or use the library of validated curricula. Each exercise produces a performance report with statistics and can be recorded for debriefing.

Procedure modules are added to the platform as required (cholecystectomy, appendectomy, gynaecology, hysterectomy, VATS, inguinal hernia, nephrectomy, bariatrics, colorectal, suturing and anastomosis or canine ovariectomy).

Options that extend the system

LAPSIM 360 (OPTIONAL):

  • Virtual reality headset compatible with all LapSim simulation modules.
  • Virtual operating theatre environment with background distractions that increases the trainee’s cognitive load.
  • Three levels of laparoscopic skills in a stress-filled environment.
Knowledge

What you learn

Patient simulator modality. The competencies this equipment trains, in the language of the training plan.

  • Develop hand-eye coordination, depth perception and psychomotor skills.
  • Handle laparoscopic instruments and the camera accurately, including two-handed manoeuvres.
  • Master intracorporeal suturing and knot tying, from basic stitches to anastomosis.
  • Perform the critical steps of each procedure and make decisions during the case.
  • Control bleeding and avoid injury to critical structures.
  • Practise complications and cases with anatomical variations without risk to the patient.
  • Train independently, at one’s own pace, with instant and objective performance feedback.

  • Basic skills: navigation, camera handling, hand-eye coordination, depth perception, object translocation, clip application, cutting and suturing
  • Suturing and anastomosis: needle loading and insertion, surgeon’s knot and square knot, interrupted and continuous suturing, side-to-side anastomosis
GENERAL SURGERY:
  • Cholecystectomy: dissection of the hepatocystic triangle, clipping of the cystic duct, freeing of the gallbladder from the cystic plate and removal
  • Appendectomy with sub-caecal and retro-caecal anatomies, using a loop or stapling technique
  • Inguinal hernia by the totally extraperitoneal (TEP) approach: reduction of the hernia sac, mesh placement and fixation with tacks or sealant
  • Right hemicolectomy with a medial-to-lateral approach and dissection of the ileocolic vessels
  • Bariatric surgery: lap-band suturing, jejunal suturing, bowel inspection and measurement
