Description

What this equipment is and what it's designed for.

HeartWorks teaches two things at once that are normally learnt separately: the anatomy of the heart and how to image it. The trainee moves the probe and sees, alongside the ultrasound sector, the heart in three dimensions cut by that same plane. Understanding why a view looks the way it does stops being an exercise in memory.

It covers the whole pathway: transthoracic over palpable landmarks, transoesophageal with real controls for anteflexion, retroflexion, lateral flexion and omniplane rotation, and 3D echocardiography as an add-on.

It comes with 30 patient cases — normal heart and lungs, various diseased states and the main cardiac devices — all of which can be interrogated with colour, pulsed and continuous wave Doppler.

Knowledge

What you learn

Patient simulator modality. The competencies this equipment trains, in the language of the training plan.

  • Three-dimensional cardiac anatomy and how it maps onto the ultrasound plane.
  • Transthoracic echocardiography: systematic acquisition of the 20 standard views.
  • Transoesophageal echocardiography: probe handling and the 28 views.
  • Assessment with colour, pulsed and continuous wave Doppler.
  • Recognition of valvular and functional pathology and of implanted devices.
  • Principles of 3D echocardiography.

Cases and pathologies

The clinical scenarios that can be simulated with this equipment.

30 cases covering the normal heart and lungs, various diseased states and the cardiac devices in routine use. All can be interrogated with colour, pulsed and continuous wave Doppler, and seen at the same time on the three-dimensional model.
