The Advanced Newborn Torso phantom closely resembles the anatomy of an average-sized newborn torso. It is constructed with realistic tissue-mimicking materials suitable for MRI and X-Ray/CT imaging. The phantom features a water-fillable umbilical cord and bladder, facilitating catheterization training.

Description

What this equipment is and what it's designed for.

The design of this Advanced Newborn Torso phantom is based on an average newborn torso. It is made from realistic tissue-mimicking materials suitable for MRI and X-Ray/CT imaging. The phantom has a water-fillable umbilical cord and bladder , which can be both used for catheterization training under ultrasound guidance.

The phantom was developed in collaboration with a group of physician experts from the Sonographic Clinical Assessment of the Newborn (SCAN) Training Program program at the University of Calgary (Department of Pediatrics).

In terms of MRI applications, the phantom tissues have realistic T2 relaxation time values, which makes this product to be the best fit for any T2-weighted MRI imaging methods. Very good results can also be achieved with proton-density imaging methods. The phantom can still be imaged with T1-weighted methods, but the T1 values are less realistic, and they are within the range of about 100 ms.

Note: By default, the phantom comes in a translucent amber appearance. The skin feature can be included upon request.

Knowledge

What you learn

Task trainer modality. The competencies this equipment trains, in the language of the training plan.

  • Adapt the technique and the collimation to newborn size.
  • Position and centre the specimen for each projection or slice plane.
  • Choose the radiographic technique and check its effect on the image.
  • Adjust the CT protocol and assess the result on the reconstructions.
  • Try out MRI sequences and compare the contrast between tissues.
  • Apply the image quality criteria and repeat the acquisition when they are not met.
