Description
What this equipment is and what it's designed for.
Lateral ventricle puncture trainer that covers the whole procedure: locating the cranial entry point, drilling the burr hole, inserting the catheter and providing the subsequent care of the external ventricular drain. It is designed so that the trainee does not stop at the puncture but goes on to manage the drainage system, which is where the complications arise.
Anatomy
The head reproduces the palpable cranial landmarks that guide the trajectory to the lateral ventricle. The ventricular system is filled with simulated fluid, so the flow of fluid confirms that the catheter is correctly sited.
Realism
The burr hole and puncture area is replaceable, which allows the procedure to be repeated without wearing out the model. Once the catheter is in place, trainees can practise levelling the system, checking patency, keeping the insertion site aseptic and recording intracranial pressure and output.
What you learn
Task trainer modality. The competencies this equipment trains, in the language of the training plan.
- Locate the cranial entry point and plot the trajectory to the lateral ventricle.
- Prepare the sterile field and drill the burr hole before puncture.
- Insert the ventricular catheter and confirm the flow of cerebrospinal fluid.
- Manage an external ventricular drain: levelling, patency and asepsis.
- Monitor and record intracranial pressure and output.
