Description

What this equipment is and what it's designed for.

Silicone trainer that simulates a surgical wound after thyroidectomy. It wraps around the neck of the manikin or standardised patient and fastens at the back of the neck with Velcro; the lower edges can be hidden under pyjamas or a surgical gown.

The incision is pre-made and its edges are reinforced so that they can be sutured. The model has four layers: skin, underlying membrane, infrahyoid muscles and an inner layer with the trachea visible. The top three layers are sutured with a round-bodied needle and the skin can also be closed with staples.

To simulate a haematoma, thick artificial blood or clot is injected between the sutures with a large-bore cannula until the wound bulges. The participant can open the wound, clean it and suture it again, and the model can be used many times.
