Description

What this equipment is and what it's designed for.

SUPER OB SUSIE is an adult-sized childbirth torso for teaching the management of labour and delivery to learners at any level. The pelvic landmarks are anatomically faithful, the cervix and birth canal are interchangeable, and the full-term neonate articulates at the neck and limbs: the movement learned on the torso is the one performed later in the scenario.

The pregnant abdominal cover lifts off to show descent and rotation from the inside, turning a manoeuvre that is hard to describe into something the learner watches while performing it. The hip joints follow the McRoberts manoeuvre, and the placenta with removable cotyledons supports work on examination of the afterbirth and retained fragments.

The design is modular and grows with the training: the postpartum haemorrhage kit (Ref. 1670), the episiotomy repair kit (Ref. 1610) and the birth assistance mechanism (Ref. 1175) are sold separately.

Knowledge

What you learn

Task trainer modality. The competencies this equipment trains, in the language of the training plan.

  • Assist cephalic deliveries and practise Ritgen’s manoeuvre
  • Manage breech deliveries — complete, frank and footling — with the Pinard, Mauriceau, Ritgen and Løvset manoeuvres
  • Resolve shoulder dystocia with the McRoberts manoeuvre, suprapubic pressure, delivery of the posterior arm and Woods’ screw manoeuvre
  • Perform instrumental deliveries with a real ventouse and forceps
  • Work on the third stage and cord complications: partial placenta praevia, nuchal cord, true knot and cord prolapse
  • Clamp and cut the umbilical cord
  • Recognise the cardinal movements: descent, internal rotation, expulsion and external rotation
  • Examine the pelvic landmarks and the dilatable cervix by vaginal examination
  • Practise urinary catheterisation and the administration of rectal suppositories
  • Suction the newborn’s nasal and oral airway
