Description

What this equipment is and what it's designed for.

This 3D printed model represents the remainder of the lower limb from our male abdominopelvic and proximal thigh specimen (MP1765). Sectioned proximally near the mid-thigh, it continues to the partially dissected foot, providing a detailed view of lower limb anatomy.
Thigh Neurovascular Structures
A transverse section through the thigh exposes the neurovascular structures of the anterior, medial, and posterior compartments. Visible structures include the great saphenous vein superficial to the terminal branches of the femoral nerve, the femoral artery and vein in the anterior compartment, and perforating branches of the deep femoral artery in the medial and posterior compartments.
Superficial Structures and Musculature
The remaining thigh, leg, and dorsum of the foot are partially dissected to demonstrate superficial structures and compartmental musculature, while the posterior aspect remains undissected for comparative study. The course of the great saphenous vein is visible from the medial thigh to the medial malleolus and the medial aspect of the dorsal venous plexus. The small saphenous vein can be traced from lateral branches of the dorsal venous plexus to the margin of the dissected superficial fascia near the lateral malleolus.
Deep Structures
Deeper branches of the femoral artery, vein, and nerve are visible beneath the anterior compartment muscles (including a sectioned sartorius) as they enter the adductor canal.
Nerve Pathways
Near the medial knee, the saphenous nerve runs superficially alongside the great saphenous vein on the posterior crural fascia, terminating as the medial cutaneous nerve of the leg branches. On the lateral leg, the medial and intermediate dorsal cutaneous branches of the superficial fibular nerve extend onto the dorsum of the foot adjacent to the dorsal venous plexus tributaries.

Knowledge

What you learn

Anatomical model modality. The competencies this equipment trains, in the language of the training plan.

  • Identify the superficial plane of the lower limb: fascia, veins and cutaneous nerves.
  • Recognise the superficial musculature and its surface contours.
  • Relate the dissection to the palpable landmarks used in examination.
Knowledge

Cases and pathologies

The clinical scenarios that can be simulated with this equipment.

  • Varicose veins and superficial venous disease.
  • Wounds and cellulitis of the leg.
  • Cutaneous sensory neuropathies.
  • Teaching surface anatomy.

Features and what's included

What the equipment does and what comes in the box, as described by the manufacturer.

Features

  • 3D printed replica made from radiological data or from a dissected cadaveric specimen, not a stylised model: this is real anatomy.
  • Developed and checked by the anatomists of the Human Anatomy Teaching Centre at Monash University.
  • Colourised to distinguish muscle, nerve, artery, vein and bone, and to separate territories or segments.
  • Not human tissue: no restrictions on transport, import or use in institutions without permission to work with cadavers.
  • Avoids the ethical and preservation problems that come with plastination.
  • Supplied with a detailed description of the anatomy represented in the specimen.
